Close to 100 surfers from right across Western Australia have relished in clean and highly contestable conditions at Ocean Beach in Denmark, for the second event of the Health Insurance Fund of Australia (HIF) WA Longboard Titles and North Fremantle Stand Up Surf WA SUP Titles presented by SunSmart.

A pulsing ground swell, combined with all-day offshore winds saw fantastic waves on offer and made for a memorable event with great performances across all 17 divisions contested.

Denmark’s protected coastline, consisting of rocky points and beautiful sweeping bays provided the ideal backdrop for WA’s best longboarders and stand up paddleboarders (SUP), with a total of seven prestigious WA State Championship Titles decided over the weekend.

The Open Women’s final was a display of impressive surfing by the girls with Georgia Young (Swanbourne) outgunning her female counterparts in an emphatic display. Young showed her competition experience and posted the best scores to take the hard fought win ahead of Issabella Marchetti (Mullaloo) in second, Busselton’s Chelsea Bedford in third and Denver Young (Cottesloe) in fourth.

“Denmark is one of my favourite places to come and surf,” said Young. “I love competing against the upcoming talent in WA and I guess it will all come down to the final event in Mandurah to see who will win the State Title.”

In the under 18s it was Denver Young who found her rhythm to bag herself a win and take the State Title. Denver said “I’m so happy to have won the Under 18’s State title. The girls were all going wave for wave throughout both finals and were surfing so well especially in the under 18’s. The best scores seemed to come from larger progressive turns on the sets so not many traditional moves came into it as it was hard to find sections to do nose rides in between turns so there wasn’t too much of that being done on the sets.”

The Stand Up Paddle Surf girls battled it out with a number of fast moves and it was Monica De Araujo to defeated Narelle Kuppers in the finals to take the Championship.

After a massive two days where a total of 71 heats run and won, all attentions now turn to Mandurah, where the third and final events of the HIF WA Longboard Titles and North Fremantle Stand Up Surf WA SUP Titles will determine who capture the remaining WA State Championship Titles and go onto represent WA at the National Titles later this year
