Wahu Surfer Groms Round 2 Coffs Harbour
It’s a national surf comp that’s bringing so much stoke to it’s venues around Australia. This weekend the Wahu Surfer Groms comp was held at Macauleys Beach in Coffs Harbour north of Sydney.
In the girls division there was one stand out local, 10 year old Carly Shanahan from Wooli NSW (picture above by Surfing NSW) who was competing in both the under 12s and under 14s divisions and took out first place in both. She said “It was definitely a different experience being a young surfer and new to hassling and strategy, but I liked the challenge and I will continue to challenge myself. I was quite confident in both finals because I had surfed twice already in these conditions and my strategy worked twice and backed myself for it to work again. The 14s were definitely a bit more of a challenge!’
Coming up agains girls nearly 4 years older than her wasn’t easy but she absolutely tore apart the small waves. Her turns and moves were too powerful for any of the other finalists to match with a pocket of high scoring waves. So what does a 10 year old work on in her training? Carly says ” Recently I have learnt how to get my board more vertical and whip it round faster and I’ve learnt to be hungrier for waves from my last few events. Plus my Smoothstar skateboard is key training for me when the surf is flat and when it’s crazy big or just landing training between surfs.”
The small 1-2 foot conditions meant the girls could stay really busy in the water finding as many little peaks as possible and throwing themselves into some big moves. Carly says “Conditions were small and there were lots of close-outs but there was the occasional sucky, sizey set that let you get a good couple of turns in. I guess what worked for me was I chose another bank to the other competitors and got two scores down early on in both heats.”
In the 10s girls there were straight finals with 2 heats and California Barrett pushed through a number of small but skilful waves to take the top spot. An amazing effort from all the 10s who powered through some tricky waves.

The Under 8 will be a mixed division with parent assists, while competition will be held in both boys and girls in the Under 10, Under 12 and Under 14 divisions.
As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.
