Wahu Surfer Groms Event 3 Results

The grommets of Australia’s East Coast are working hard to keep up with so many competitions available to them with the Wahu Surfer Groms making it’s 3rd stop at Kiama on the NSW South Coast this weekend. The swell was average with lots of small waves rolling into protected Bombo Beach. There were over 100 surfers in this week’s event which shows surfing is alive and well in the colder waters as well as the warmer northern waters of the state.

As usual Wahu put on a number of fun activities to keep the grommets frothing and smiling over the 2 days. There were crumbed cutlets as far as the eye could see, with loads of prizes going round too!

After returning from the Rip Curl Grom Search in WA Bodhi Leigh-Jones wasted no time getting back in the water and into competition mode taking her spot at number one in the girls U14s finals. Bodhi was mighty busy in her heat and pocketed a number of high scoring waves to secure her win against Tru Starling and Nica Frayne who also travelled down from Sydney and Maddison Poole from Newcastle.

Following her sister’s lead and her own season of first places it was Cedar Leigh-Jones who added a first to her mantle in the Under 12s division. Cedar made the tricky conditions look easy to the beach-goers swivelling her little board around and completing some great manoeuvres to defeat Kasey Hargreaves, Gabi Spake and Charli Hurst.

In the Under 10 girls it was great to see so many local girls in the finals with some great skills and local knowledge in play. Keira Buckpitt from Culburra was so close to taking the win when Kiahni Scott came came blazing through to defeat her and Jada Thomas, Oceana Rodgers, Tyla Hurst and Zahlia Short.

The 10-event Wahu Surfer Groms Comps caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania. The Under 8 will be a mixed division with parent assists, while competition will be held in both boys and girls in the Under 10, Under 12 and Under 14 divisions.

As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.
