Wahu Surfer Groms Comp #1 Dee Why NSW

This weekend saw the start of the Australian Wahu Surfer Groms Comp that travels all round Australia for kids in the divisions under 14, 12, 10, and mixed Under 8’s with parent assist. The events are a fund 2 day format to encourage beach fun and friendly competition including a number of beach games throughout the 2 days and loads of Wahu prizes to be won.

The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps are proudly supported by Everdure Barbeques, Surfing Australia and Surfing NSW. The winners from the Under 14s division from all the events are invited to an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.

The first event kicked off in Sydney with a massive south swell which kept most people out of the water for the last 2 weeks. Luckily Dee Why and Collaroy beaches were perfect to run the comp with the large swells wrapping around these north facing beaches to provide clean 2-3 foot waves for the kids.

In the girls divisions we saw Bodhi Leigh-Jones take out the Under 14s with some incredible moves that were rewarded respectfully. Her 2 top waves both scored 8 points which put her will in front of her fellow finalists to take the win.

In the Under 12’s, Queenslander Zahli Kelly made her trip worth it by claiming top spot with a final total of 15.67 in a tight battle with local Cedar Leigh-Jones after her top performances in the QLD Junior State Titles, Zahli is really turning the heat up in her division.

Kiahni Scott made her war to the top of the point score in the Under 10s final based on her accumulated points score against Bodhi Simon and Ruby Griffiths, there were some well rewarded waves for the Under 10’s and it was great to see them put in 110%.
