Tyler Wright Wins Vans US Open of Surf 2014
Tyler Wright from Australia has just won the VANS US Open of Surf at Huntington Beach California. In front of an always massive crowd, Tyler moved through the semis after defeating Malia Manuel with a score of 13.17 to face off with Stephanie Gilmore. The heat had a restart with a lull in the swell, after which Gilmore took a couple of early rides locking in scores. wright remained scoreless for 10 minutes but pulled out a couple of great moves on her first wave and then backed up with a 8 point wave on the second. Gilmore tried to come back with 10 minutes to go but couldn’t pick up the second 7-point score she needed to take the lead and the win. Final scores Tyler 14.77 Stephanie 13.16.
Wright’s performance throughout the event has shown the surf industry and the world that women’s surfing is continuing to be a major progressive movement at it’s top level. There were surfing manoeuvres displayed this week in both the juniors and opens that were really impressive even though the conditions were average.
Tyler Wright has moved up the ASP World Championship rankings into 3rd place after this win riding behind defending champ Carissa Moore and previous US Open champ Sally Fitzgibbons. The top 2 spots remain unchanged with 4 events to go for the year. The next stop is the new event the Swatch Women’s Pro at Trestles, San Clement California.
