Tarnea O’Meara is a foodie, a surfer and a lover of the beach. How could you not be growing up between the salty dunes, golden sands and lush turquoise surf of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. She developed her love of the ocean quite naturally and remembers weekends spent at Mooloolaba Beach watching her siblings at Nippers. “I was so jealous of them running in and out of the water with their friends having so much fun. I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to be in on it too.”

Surfing took Tarnea into a new realm as a teenager. It was something she fell naturally into and continues to compete in as a surfer on the World Surf League’s Qualifying Series events. Sibling envy was again the cause of her first waves and memories on a board. She recollects surfing on her brother’s board at Grassy Head when she was 16. “I wanted so badly to be better than my brother, to do what he was doing in the waves and getting better every session out there.

“When she’s not surfing, Tarnea is getting stuck into living a healthy lifestyle fuelled by clean eating and working towards completing her university degree in nutritional and dietetic medicine which makes her more than qualified to inspire us with the best foods and ingredients to put into our bodies. But the ocean has her heart and it’s more than just a place to train for a competition. Life in the salt water is beneficial for the human body she says. “Salt is an amazing product that has had so much slack over the years. But it’s important to remember that table salt that is heavily processed is very different to natural salt. It’s a natural healer,

But the ocean has her heart and it’s more than just a place to train for a competition. Life in the salt water is beneficial for the human body she says. “Salt is an amazing product that has had so much slack over the years. But it’s important to remember that table salt that is heavily processed is very different to natural salt. It’s a natural healer, hydration aid (if you use it right), cleanser, exfoliant, mineral (magnesium, calcium, potassium). Just a jump in the ocean makes your body vibrate with energy.”

For someone who has travelled the world and seen the most beautiful beaches and environments in the world, there are three destinations that really struck Tarnea. She says; “Yosemite is amazing. The hiking is like nothing in Australia. Hiking around those places makes you realise the beauty of nature in a slow setting rather than in a car. You can take in absolutely everything – the smells, rain, rocks, glaciers, wildlife – it’s a whole different sensory experience.

“New Zealand is as pretty as a postcard. Everywhere you turn you’re blown away by the beauty.” And finally, “The Rockies in Canada. Again the glaciers and mountains are mindblowing. Lake Louise is a pool of crystal, aqua water like nothing I’ve ever seen.”
