The Subway® Summer Surf Series kicked off today with a bang at Trigg Point in Western Australia, with clean high performance waves on offer at Perth’s premiere wave location.
WA’s best young junior surfers dodged the effects of ex tropical cyclone Olwyn as it tracked south across the state. Dark and stormy skies couldn’t dampen the spirits of close to 100 male and female competitors, as stop # 12 of the 13 event national series showcased WA’s emerging surf talent.
Competitors from right across WA brought their ‘A-Game’ and impressed in under 16 and under 18 age divisions as well as the recently added under 21 category.
“The forecast was not looking good at all,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. “Everything was pointing towards strong winds, small surf and a lot of rain, so we’ve definitely lucked out.”
In the girls divisions it was south-west surfers Pheobe McGregor (Yallingup), Emi Campbell (Denmark) and Mia McCarthy (Margaret River) that looked in great touch. However, it was a Denver Young (Cottesloe) that shone the brightest in the under-18’s. Young used an array of forehand manoeuvres to score a 14.57 combined total (from a possible 20).
Finals day threw up some really tricky conditions says 16’s winner Phoebe McGregor “they were probably the smallest waves I have ever surfed in my whole life but pretty fun when you found the right section.”
Although the waves provided a challenge with their size the girls made some big moves, Phoebe says “The top points were awarded for good quality turns and fitting as many as you could on such small waves, it was so tiny was and hectic but all the girls were ripping and there was only about a point difference in all 3 girls finals showing how close were all are in our abilities at the moment.”
