Stephanie Gilmore Wins 6th World Title Carissa Moore Wins Target Maui Pro

It was one of the best events of the year with the Honoloua Bay, Maui swells coming to town for the final event of the ASP Women’s World Tour event and the event that would crown the new World Champion.

Firstly, thank you Target for coming on board early in the year to make this amazing event possible. Finishing the year in Hawaii and in Maui with some of the best waves on offer was just the best thing for women’s surfing this year.

The waves peaked yesterday for the round 3/quater finals of the event with Courtney Conlogue scoring a massive triple over head wave and posting a perfect 10. It really was a great day for the progressive women’s surfing movement watching the girls take off on some perfect peelers and making the most out of big turns, powerful carves and vertical boosts.

Today on finals day it was a roller coaster of emotion for the top 3 girls Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and Tyler Wright all moving themselves around on the world title chess board. Courtney Conlogue remained on fire from the quarters and knocked Steph out of the event in the next heat Sally Fitzgibbons lost a heartbreaking final few minutes to the in-form Bianca Buitendag and finally Tyler pushed through past Lakey Peterson to keep herself in the World Title race agains Steph.

In the Semis Hawaiian powerhouse Carissa More and Tyler Wright made sure the finals would be a nail biter by eliminating Courtney and Lakey.

In the Finals Carissa posted just 5 waves to Tyler’s 9, and showed why she is in this new era of women’s surfing with a 9 and 8 to secure her event win and giving Steph her 6th World Title with Tyler’s 2nd place finish.

“That was probably the most emotional I’ve ever been watching someone else surf in my life,” Gilmore said. “I know how focused Tyler (Wright) is and I was completely prepared for a surf-off. However, I also knew how incredibly capable Carissa (Moore) is at virtually every venue. I feel like I had a year’s worth of emotions packed into one heat. I won my first title here at Honolua Bay, but after my loss in the Quarterfinals, I was prepared for anything to happen. I’m really emotional right now.”

* Props to Courtney Conlogue who was injured for so much of the year, missing so many events. She’s back in her finest form and we can’t wait to see her power on in 2015.
