Sienna Coulter Glides with Hoku Surfboards and looks forward to 28th Snowy McAlister Festival
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We were all meant to shine. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” (Marianne Williamson)
Hoku is Hawai’ian for star and the beautiful Hoku Surfboards encompass the spirit of Hawai’ian surfing in each of their shapes and specialised longboard designs.
“Surfing has an awesome way of bringing friends together, encouraging people to share the pure joy that only surfing can bring. Our aim is to encourage more girls to get out there and give it their best shot, whether that means being a weekend warrior, or setting goals as a comp rider.” Says Sharene of Hoku.
In 2014 Hoku put the call out in search of a team rider and through our own networks a girl of the sea, 15 year old Sienna Coulter was appointed the position to not only ride one of the divine 9’1 boards but represent Hoku in and out of the water.
Upon accepting her place as a team rider and receiving her first Hoku longboard Sienna said “It was so amazing to win. I surf every day and since having a Hoku board out in the surf I’ve had so many comments on the style and design of the board. It’s just so beautiful, it makes me feel happy surfing it. It’s blue with a white paisley pattern, it looks just as beautiful as it rides.”
Hoku’s boards are designed to be the perfect all-rounder as Sienna has experienced, sliding down the lines of the Autumn swells in Sydney. “The Hoku shapes are really easy to paddle and get on the rail especially on a late take off. I’ve surfed it out in up to 4 foot and managed to pull in straight down the line, a walk up the board and finish with a cut back. It handles all manoeuvres really well and is great for big carves and nose riding on a good size face. The way it flows is so smooth and just really nice to ride.”
Sienna’s local break is Manly Beach, where the Snowy McAlister Longboard Festival is taking place next weekend. Sienna loves the culture, wave variety and the people and can’t wait to take part in her first Snowy representing Hoku. “Apart from weaving in and out of the learners and tourists you can always find a fun wave on the Manly strip. Surfing at North Steyne, where the Snowy will be held, can be challenging but when I’m out in the line up I look for the set waves and pick off the shoulders of the waves to make the most out of what can be a tricky bank. Sometimes you can get too deep and can’t get around the waves but when it holds it can be a great combo wave.”
Sienna says her best moves on the Hoku are a wrapping cut back, walking to a hang 5 and the drop knee. She says “At the Snowy the big points could come from some traditional moves and floaters.”
