THE INFO:

The Red Bull Queen of the Bay event will be held at the famous Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu when waves reach 20ft between the waiting period, 1 October – 21 November 2017.

The opening ceremony for the event – in which the waiting period is already in play – was held this week. The women invited to the event took part in a traditional Hawaiian event ceremony in anticipation of the inaugural event that has just been taken on by Red Bull.

North Shore local and big wave charger, Makani Adric took the time to recognise the people and history behind the sport. “Thank you to all the girls who made women’s big wave surfing what it is today. Thank you Betty and Wrenna for being the face of this event. Without all the love, support, and encouragement we wouldn’t be standing here. In honor of Queen Kaahumanu, Mahalo nui loa. We are all excited to be a part of this event.”

THE SURFERS:

The invitee list includes the best of the best, they are the women who have the skills, determination and incredible history of surfing under their belts. We’re likely to see the legend herself, Keala Kennelly, as well as 2017 Peahi Challenge winner Paige Alms, as well as all the big wave surfers pushing the limits in some of the biggest waves on the planet.

THE FORECAST:

Betty has said “Tropical cyclones in west north Pacific became active again last week and this week. Models are showing one merging with the mid-latitude jet stream near Japan around Sunday/Monday next week and turning back east near Aleutians. Along with the regular mid Fall lows moving east south of Aleutians this week, at least we are returning to at least average for October at peak of events (late Thurs to Friday and again Sunday/Monday coming up). But long way from Waimea, those are just 5ft-ish Hawaii scale (1st one) and 8ft-ish (second).”

Event organisers have set up a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for the prize purse for the competitors. Every contribution counts and is part of making history.
