The newest Subway® Summer Surf Series champions were crowned today in Margaret River, Western Australia. Australia’s newest junior surfing series saw groms from right across WA make the most of the their last days of school holidays surfing hard and eating fresh.

Finalists performed in powerful and punchy 2-3 foot peaks at Gas Bay, with clean ‘all-day’ offshore conditions blessing competitors, officials and spectators alike.

Phoebe McGregor (Yallingup) displayed both style and grace to capture the Under-16 Girls division, throwing down a lethal mixture of backhand carves and slashes, giving her a confidence building win in the 25 minute final. McGregor stuck to her guns, defeating April McPherson (Mandurah), Mia McCarthy (Margaret River) and Cassia Haegele (Exmouth) in a one sided affair.

“The waves have been really fun this weekend and it’s great to have a new competition series to be a part of.” said McGregor.

Emi Campbell (Denmark) saved her best for last scoring an excellent 8.67 (from a possible 10) in the Under-18 Girls final and book her way to a 3 day camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre. Campbell was superior in wave selection and positioning, defeating Bailee Hastie (Gracetown), Phoebe McGregor, and Denver Young (Cottesloe).

“I’ve been to the HPC a couple of times before,” said Campbell. “It helped develop my surfing to this point and I’m really excited to get back there.”

In other results, Bailee Hastie (Gracetown) and Nick Muntz (Trigg Beach) were awarded a free wildcard into the 2015 Australian Surfmasters Titles (Open Men’s and Women’s divisions) as part of the Australian Surf Festival for winning the newly introduced Under-21 divisions.

“I compete at the Surf Festival last year in Coffs Harbour and I look forward to getting back their again in 2015,” said Hastie. “I haven’t competed in quite some time,” said Muntz “I’m stoked with the win and thank everyone who’s made this weekend possible.”

Competitors escaped the heat of the day, making the most of the expression sessions and free lunch on offer thanks to Subway®. The Subway® Surf Camp at the renowned Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre is conducted by Australia’s leading surf coaches, will provide participants with the guidance and training they need to make the transition from surfer to professional athlete.
