Palm Beach Longboarders Old Mal Log Rally
Saturday 8th of November was the annual Palm Beach Longboarders Old Mal Log Rally in the heart of “Summer Bay” on Sydney’s northern beaches. Conditions were not perfect with a nasty onshore North East wind picking up but the competitors did what they do best in picking out some amazing little faces and pockets in the line up and making magic happen.
It was so great sitting on the grass beneath the Barrenjoey Lighthouse and sand dunes with some great people and a relaxed atmosphere, there were some pretty nice looking boards (and fins) as well.
The girls took what they could in their heats, on a bank that was rapidly changing with the dropping tide. There was some nice little sections of hanging 5 and drop knees right to the shore. Scraping at every last wave the finals were held late in the afternoon as the wind picked up again and the kite surfers got a little crazy in the competition zone.
It was our very own Roisin Carolan from Byron Bay who managed 8 waves and took the win with a combination of fast and well timed manoeuvres although it was a tight final with Makala Smith also picking off a high number of well scored waves. Well done to the girls who worked really hard to score what they could it testing conditions!
Roisin said after her win “It was a great day at the Palmy Old Mal / Log rally today. We we’re greeted with fun 1-2ft waves and sunshine. The boards on display we’re amazing, and had everyone frothing. The girls were all shredding, and it was a tight final. We finished the day watching the men’s final, making the deteriorating surf look amazing. Thanks to all the organisers, competitors and sponsors for such a great event.”
