The NSSA Uppers South West Open Conference was held over the weekend in an unusually average wind swell at Uppers in California.

In 2-4 foot swells throughout the event the girls 2 divisions took to the water in the last NSSA event before the National Conference. Malia Osterkamp who has had an outstanding season said “It was tricky in the wind swell but there was definitely some shoulder high sets to take advantage of, and the wind calmed down a bit for the final.”

With some of the United States’ best junior surfers in the water it was never going to be an easy road to the top. Malia said it all came down to wave selection and giving full top to bottom manoeuvres. She said “It was a stacked final, anyone could’ve won it. It was so close between Tia and I.” After a nail biting final it was Malia who I managed to find the best waves to make 2-3 snaps and a solid finish on each and secure her first place.

12 year old Samantha Sibley wasn’t far behind the girls in the final finishing with a solid score and result. Malia said “Sam’s did so well all event, she’s been ripping lately!”

In the Open division Tiare Thompson kept herself an edge above the rest with solid combinations and great wave choice in the finals. She kept Bethany Zelasko at bay to win, although Bethany walked away with the point score winner of the season.
