NEWS: Best News! Bethany Hamilton Will Surf At First Ever Surf Ranch Pro Against World’s Best
NEWS // WORLD SURF LEAGUE ANNOUNCEMENT
Organisers of the first-ever Surf Ranch Pro presented by Hurley have announced today that the legend herself, Bethany Hamilton, has been invited to compete in the upcoming up as stop eight of the Women’s Championship Tour (CT), September 6 – 9 in Lemoore, California.
Each time Bethany has been offered wildcard performances, including the Fiji Women’s Pro in 2016 where she made the semifinal and eliminated eventual WSL Champion Tyler Wright, have been incredible to watch.
Jessie Miley-Dyer and the WSL Commissioner’s Office have made it known that it was an obvious choice to invite the 28-year-old, Kauai-born surfer. She has had opportunities to surf the man-made wave earlier this year and blew the minds of everyone (as she continually does) when she put herself deep under the shade of the wave. Just last week videographer Aaron Leiber posted on his Instagram, video of Bethany completing an air reverse at the Texas Waveco pool too!
As her ninth CT event, she’s well adjusted to the format and challenge of competing against the best in the world.
“I’m so excited to be competing at the Surf Ranch Pro,” Bethany said when learning of her Wildcard selection. “I love the idea of competing in a semi-controlled environment. It’s great to know what I’m getting with the waves and to be on the same playing field as everyone else. All of us girls are just going to be going to town, shredding it.”
She’s admitted to being in training to “Getting dialled in on the wave and fine-tuning my turns. I’m going to be working hard on what I have, and hone in on my own wave skill. It’s just mesmerizing that it’s really three waves in one, so learning how to maximize each section is going to be key in the competition. I’m excited to get out there and start working on it.”
This event will be her first after the birth of her second son, Wesley, in March of this year.
“With all the people there watching, the energy is going to feel really different. It’s going to be amazing to compete amongst all the fans and be with all the girls again,” Hamilton said.
