Injidup Carpark in Yallingup Western Australia was the break for WA’s Original Sourse Boardrider’s Battle.

It was 20 year old superstar of the ASP Junior and Qualifying tours, Bronte Macaulay who shone bright for the winning team, Margaret River with some incredibly high scores and killer styling. Bronte says “the conditions were really fun, it was about 3 ft and clean, great to have a comp is such good waves.”

“It’s really special to be able to represent Margaret River Boardriders, everyone is really awesome and we all had heaps of fun cheering each other on this weekend.” Says Bronte. Margaret River is one of Australia’s world class surfing locations with some pretty amazing waves on show and one of the ASP World Tour events each year. The town itself is just a small and prides itself on it’s surf culture and close knit community. Bronte says of “Margs”…”Your bound to bump into someone from the club in the surf or down the street any day. We’re a pretty close club. The best part about being a member of the Margie’s club is probably just hanging out with everyone. There’s always a funny story to tell at the end of the day. Also it feels great to represent a place that you love.”

Boardriders clubs are such a big part of Australia’s coastal communities and there are so many families who spend their lives intertwined with the healthy culture of surfing and community events. The Macaulay Family are one of these families “I think I’ve been with the club since I was about 12. Our family has been involved over the last 10 or so years. I remember we use to have sausage sizzles outside the local supermarker to raise money for the club. We’ve all had so many great memories with the club.” Says Bronte.

9.50 and a 8.50 were locked in on the scoreboard by Bronte to secure her clubs passage to the finals against home club Yallingup and Mandurah where Margs pulled out all stops to gain the upper hand with each of their surfers to put themselves on top of the day’s leaderboard and book their ticket to Sydney for the finals.

Western Australia may not have the population of the East Coast but certainly makes their mark on the girls surf scene. Bronte and her sister Laura have been making their mark on the Junior and QS tour as well as former CT surfer Claire Bevilacqua. “We have some really talented young surfers coming up in the club from the Margaret River/ Gracetown area.” Says Bronte… “Claire Bevo is a great surfer who are lot of the young WA girls look up to.”

Bronte has also had a massive and successful year on the World Junior Tour (finishing 3rd) and Qualifying Tour (finishing 14th) and is looking to make moves to join the top 17 in the not too distant future, she says of her year…”As a whole, I’m pretty happy with my results on the WQS, to make my first final, was a pretty special moment for me. In the semi finals of the World Juniors I could have done a few more little things that would have made a big difference in my loss agains (eventual winner Mahina Maeda) but I’ve taken them on board for the future. It’s definitely going be really hard to qualify, but it feels like if you can string a few events together, it’s possible.”

What about having your Dad as your shaper, living the dream…”I’m pretty lucky to have him! He’s great, he knows me really well and is really good at shaping different boards for different types of conditions. he’s the best.”

Can’t wait to see what Bronte will have in store for us for 2015! Watch. This. Space!
