Over 100 surfers from right across Western Australia have benefited from a highly anticipated weekend groundswell, with near perfect winter conditions on offer at Avalon Point for the final events of the Health Insurance Fund of Australia (HIF) WA Longboard Titles and North Freo Stand Up Surf WA SUP Titles presented by SunSmart.

As monstrous waves hammered the south-west corner of the state, Avalon’s iconic left-hand point break delivered long clean walls in the 4-6 feet range, perfectly suited to the traditional longboards and high performance paddle boards that were utilised across seventeen separate divisions contested.

“There was a lot of excitement and hype in the air this weekend,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. “The size and quality of surf on offer on both days was phenomenal and provided a fitting conclusion to a sensational 2015 competition series.”

Commitment proved to be the key to success, with WA stalwart Georgia Young (Swanbourne) showing her class, posting high scores and claiming an impressive wins on her way to State Championship glory.

Swanbourne’s Georgia Young surfed with poise and class to claim her third consecutive Open Women’s State Championship. Although pressured from an emerging new generation of female longboarders in WA, Young was too good weaving and linking her turns effortlessly to leave Issabella Marchetti (Mullaloo) in second ahead of Chelsea Bedford (Busselton) in third and Belinda Le Grice (East Fremantle) in fourth.

“It’s been an amazing weekend with some great waves,” Young said. “Last years wasn’t my best performance at the Australian Titles so I’m really looking forward to getting to Coffs Harbour with hopes of winning.”

After a marathon weekend and a hugely successful 2015 event series that saw longboard and SUP events held in Yallingup, Rottnest, Denmark and Mandurah, all attentions now turn towards best preparing the WA State Teams for the upcoming Longboard National Titles in Coffs Harbour, NSW in August and SUP National Titles in Currumbin, QLD in October.
