Laura Enever Wins 2015 Hurley Australian Open
The 2015 Hurley Australian Open of Surfing rounded out its epic week with some amazing 3-4 foot swell. The event that has attracted tens of thousands of spectators to the Surfing, skating and music is a fitting tribute to the Famous Manly Beach Australia, home of the first ever World Surfing Championships 50 years ago. It was local girl Laura Enever who claimed her first victory in a long time in her familiar waters in the World Surf League (WSL) QS6000 (Qualifying Series) event.
The quarter finals kicked off early with a 7am start where Malia, Georgia, Bronte and Sage were knocked out leaving Tatiana, Laura, Tyler and Nikki through to the semi finals.
Laura had continued her consistently high scoring waves into the semi agains an inform CT Tour Rookie, Tatiana Weston-Webb. Laura’s winning form allowed her to take hold of the heat with 2 massive scores. Tatiana did answer back with 2 big lip smacking hacks of her own but they weren’t enough to keep Miss Enever down.
Nikki Van Dijk travelled through the event with some lethal manoeuvres from sneaky waves that were unidentifiable to her competitors. The semi with Tyler wasn’t one of her finest but really, who can compete with Tyler Wright and her air game. With at least 3 air reverse moves Tyler had no problem sliding through to the final to meet Laura.
The final was held at low tide and the girls chose to paddle out at the most south end of the competition site where there were a couple of clean looking peaks. It was Laura to pull up the first couple of high scorers and line up her final attack. Tyler couldn’t keep up with Laura’s movement in the line up and unfortunately couldn’t find any of her massive launches from the semis.
Laura said after her win “Its more than a relief more than anything to be up her and win again. I’ve been surfing so much and loving it so much and enjoying everything that comes along with it at the moment, all this happiness has turned into a great thing. I took it all in the moment this week and it worked out.”
“My local break of North Narrabeen has some great lefts and so I love going on my back hand and just felt like I was really connecting with the ocean. It’s a great start before Snapper so I guess all I have to do is let go and surf Snapper and enjoy it all.” Said Laura.
Massive congratulations to Laura on a great victory, crowd pleasing moves and power surfing this week. Great to see you win at home and be back in the game!
