Isabella Nichols Takes Win At Inaugural & Prestigious Michael Peterson Classic

World Junior Champion Wins First MP Classic Women’s Division

The Open Women’s division of the 2018 Michael Peterson Classic was held at Duranbah Beach in peaky two-to-three foot surf on a pristine autumn weekend. It was the 2016 World Junior Champion and Qualifying Series surfer from the Sunshine Coast, Isabella Nichols, who her A-game to the beach.

In the 30-minute final, Isabella used her priority like a pro. Priority and time management are so crucial in surf events and understanding when to utilise priority can be the difference between a surfer who wins and doesn’t. For Isabella her clever use of priority meant that she got the best waves of the heat, and with her experience gave her the confidence to pull out all her strongest manoeuvres to take the win over pro juniors Alyssa Lock (Tweed Heads, NSW), Ellie Brooks (Gold Coast, QLD) and Sasha Barker (Mudjimba, QLD) who finished respectively.

“It’s so exciting that the girls have a division in this series this year.” Said Isabella after her win. “The standard of top female surfers in Queensland is so high which means that every event now has higher-stakes and a much higher quality of surfing – particularly on the Gold Coast. I can see this division being very competitive in the future, it was such an awesome weekend.”

The event was contested by many of the world qualifying series surfers who are on the cusp of WCT qualification. Congratulations to all the women for producing such a high level of professional surfing at another outstanding event. It is also a tribute to Surfing Queensland for adding the women’s division to this event and series, a crucial step in grass roots surfing for female surfers in the development of future world championship tour surfers and potential world and Olympic champions.

Each of the finalists will take home their share of the $3,000 prize purse as well as precious series ratings points towards an overall QCC Title and a wild card position at the 2019 Quiksilver and Roxy Pro trials.
