The Hurley Australian Open Of Surfing Back in Manly for 2015 Sally Fitzgibbons Interview
2015 will be bigger and better in the surfing world and today we attended the launch of the 2015 Hurley Australian Open returning to Australia’s iconic Manly Beach to get a glimpse into what Manly will show us on 7-15th February 2015. Australia’s superstar mermaid Sally Fitzgibbons attended the launch ahead of the big ASP World Championship Tour final event at the Target Maui Pro coming up 22nd November.
Sally said “There is going to be an Aussie World Champion in 2015 and I hope it’s me.” With the title battle coming down to 3 scenarios between Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and Tyler Wright the heat will be on for Sally to take her very first and well earned title. “Hopefully I’ll be surfing at the Hurley Australian Open of Surfing as a World Champ” Sally said to The Mermaid Society.
Manly Beach’s conditions are on average between 1-3 foot and can be tricky depending on the fast moving banks and summer on-shore swells during the last 2 events, despite the small surf the girls have displayed amazing skill and determination to pull out all they have to score big. We asked Sally what she thought the advantages of these conditions are for the girls. “Most of the NSW girls surf these conditions day in and day out and we’ve had countless grommet and ASP events in these kind of waves and have really proved ourselves in these conditions… on it’s day, Manly can be incredible.”
The event launch was attended by NSW State Premier and Member for Manly, Mike Baird (himself and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot both surf regularly at Manly) said ” I am delighted this event will be returning to Manly this summer. Having professionals of the calibre of Sally Fitzgibbons is a huge boom for Sydney. We have some of the best beaches and surf culture anywhere on the international circuit and events such as this showcase Sydney and Manly to the world.”
The Hurley Australian Open of Surfing features the Women’s ASP 6-Star Qualifying Series division as well as the Women’s Pro Junior Qualifying Series divisions. There is also a skate comp with some of the best bowl skaters in the country and world. Live music and street entertainment also draws large crowds to the beach in what is one of the biggest event’s for Manly for the year.
We look forward to brining you all the latest from one of the first events of the year.
