Duranbah Beach on the Gold Coast was the idyllic location for the grommets over the weekend as they switched back into competition mode after the Christmas / New Year holiday. It’s Summer school holidays in Australia and what better way to spend than amongst your friends on the beach and in the surf. With such a massive surf culture, the Gold Coast event of the series was never going to be small, 100 kids entered into the divisions under 18, 16 and 21.
In 2 foot D-Bar conditions the girls went nuts with their surfing ensuring they could work the waves and post high scoring waves. In the under 16 Girls division Alyssa Lock (Snapper Rocks, QLD) was on fire and totally dominated the final scoring a combined two wave total of 16.43 points and giving her the divisional win.
In the Under 18 Girls Jalessa Vincent (Coolum Beach, QLD) and Phoebe King (Mudjimba, QLD)were standouts on the first day. Jalessa fought hard throughout the final on Sunday to make a 6 point ride her ticket to victory as the under 18’s winner. She said after her win…“The Subway Summer Surf Series gives the younger demographic of surfers the chance to compete in a national series at multiple events. I placed third in the Sunshine Coast event and was fortunate enough to win this Gold Coast leg of the series which I am ecstatic about,” said Vincent.
In one of the tightest battles of the weekend it was Ellie Brooks (Elanora, QLD) who claimed victory in the Under 21 Girls division over Jade Wheatley (Currumbin, QLD). Both girls battled it out throughout the day however Ellie’s early lead proved too hard to catch. Both Brooks and Cooney will receive a wildcard entry into the 2015 Australian Surfmasters title that is run as part of the Australian festival of Surfing.
The inaugural Subway® Summer Surf Series comprises of 13 events Australia wide and has been designed to unearth the best male and female junior surfers in quality waves throughout Australia. Gold Coast is stop seven of the Series and is expected to attract as many as 100 surfers vying for the top honours.
This unique series will give entrants in the under 16, under 18 and under 21 age divisions the competitive experience needed to further develop their surfing careers as well as test their skills in quality waves, all while taking place in a healthy and fun environment.
As an added bonus to the Series, the winners of the under 18 division at each event will be invited to respective boys’ and girls’ three-day “Subway® Summer Surf Camps” at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.
