The NSSA (National Scholastic Surf Series) ran their Southwest Explorer events at Ponto Jetties in Carlsbad,on October 7-8. Due to the cancellation of the prior event on their calendar, which was due to small waves, the NSSA ran double events on each day.

On Saturday, the surfers found pumping waves in the 5′ – 8′ range. The conditions in the morning were extremely clean with open faces easily accessible to both the longboarders and shortboarders. By the afternoon the conditions changed significantly as the wind picked up.

Ella McCaffray, who won four events in the girls’ shortboard divisions, and two women’s events over the course of the weekend, said of Saturday’s event, “North County hasn’t had much surf lately, so it was really exciting to get the best surf of the year at the NSSA.”On Sunday, the waves were in the 4′-6′

On Sunday, the waves were in the 4′-6′ range, but remained extremely blown out. The conditions were very challenging, but the surfers remained positive and really made the most of it. Brooke Young, who won one of the Women’s division on Sunday, said, “The conditions were choppy and had a rough rip current going through the lineup, so it was about luck and timing.”

The next NSSA Southwest Explorer events will be held March 24 -25 in Huntington Beach.
