Gabriela Bryan On Winning The 2018 Sunset Beach Pro Junior

EVENT // 2018 SUNSET BEACH PRO JUNIOR

There are very few events open to groms and non-World Tour surfers at world-class breaks and that’s one of the reasons why the Sunset Beach Pro Junior is so special. Gabriela Bryan from Hawaii took out the event yesterday in the four-to-five foot, or overhead swell for the girls, at one of the Triple Crown of Surfing’s locations. Gabriela said “The waves and the conditions were really good all day for the finals. I just had to stay on top of selecting the best waves and make sure I could produce a good score and it all worked out. It was really awesome that we get the opportunity to surf a Triple Crown venue with just a couple of other girls out, especially when the waves are good!”

Gabriela took to the water in the finals against fellow Kauai surfer Keala Tomoda-Bannert (who also scored the highest wave of the event with an 8.75 in the quarterfinals), Valentina Resano, and Summer Ivy in an epic showcase of junior surfing.

Scores were awarded for good wave selection as well as the commitment to the bigger waves, good technique. Gabriela stayed patient before selecting a couple of the final heat’s bomb sets to consolidate her scores for the big win.

She said her board for the day was “a 6’1 Tokoro, which a step up from my regular board. It is nice to have a little extra foam out at Sunset even if it is not that big, just because there is always so much water moving.”

Ahead of her high school graduation in July, Gabriela has said she will be travelling to Australia to compete in a couple of Qualifying Series events, then to Tahiti for the regional Pro Junior and QS. Her goal this year is to be the next World Junior Champion.

Gabriela is just 15 years old but already has high hopes for qualification on the World Tour with the support of the Hawaiian surf community. She said “Being a grom in Hawaii is great. We have the best training ground with good waves, warm water, and so much support.” Plenty of inspirational surfers to look up to and paddle out with too, no doubt.

Congratulations to all the surfers on excellent results amongst the best waves Sunset Beach had to offer
