The English National Surfing Championships were held at Watergate Bay just north of Newquay on the English Surf Coast over the weekend. Small 1 – 2 foot, onshore conditions didn’t stop the girls getting amongst it in both the long and shortboard divisions in an effort to claim a national title.

It was 13 year old Ellie Turner from Bude who went into the weekend as a triple threat in the shortboards walked away with a double win in both the under 18s and 16s and a 2nd place in the under 14s division. Ellie said of both finals “The conditions were tough and everyone was performing really well with a variety of turns in the small surf. Emily Currie, Georgia Timson and Peony Wright were all standouts and made the under 18’s final challenging and close.”

All rounder Emily Currie took out the women’s longboard title race with a dominant lead over her opposition in the finals. She had a number of smooth moves in really tough longboard conditions with barely any face.

Emily wasn’t happy with just one first place and on Day 3 made sure she took home her 2nd title in the Open women’s division. In a close finish with Peony and some more workable waves that picked up to 3-4 foot compared to the previous 2 days the girls demonstrated great ability and progression with up to 4 turns in a wave, linking tricky sections of the onshore wind.

Well done to all the girls on a great weekend of competition.
