16 year old Dax McGill from Hawaii has had a ripper week in the 3-Star Maui and Sons Woman Pichilemu Pro presented by Corona in Punta de Lobos in Chile. Conditions couldn’t have been better for the girls with onshore 3-4 foot swell and the most picturesque backdrop.
The event is the first for Chile and was run smoothly and with some world class waves.
Dax held strong through the week to meet Argentinean Josefina Ane in the finals where she utilised her powerful cutbacks to secure an 8 and a 6 to defeat Josefina who only managed two scores in the 5’s range. Final scores were 14.65 to 11.40. As a result of her victory, Dax scored 750 points to put her in 51st place in the last event of the year after competing in only 3 events.
After her win Dax said “I’m so stoked to finish off the season with a win in such a magnificent place as Punta de Lobos. I’ll remember this for the rest of my life. I think I surfed well in all of my heats, but it was hard getting used to the cold water and the currents that were really strong. But I was able to overcome all of these obstacles to win this event and I just want to thank my Mom for all her help and for coming all the way out here with me.”
Dax impressed the judges all week scoring the event’s highest score with a high 9 and highest combo score. Expect to see big things from this Hawaiian grom in 2015 as her surfing matures and reaches new heights.
