Courtney Conlogue Wins Oi Rio Pro 2015

17th May 2015

In front of the biggest crowd on the beach of BARRA DA TIJUCA in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil the girls took to the water with the quarter finals of one of the most exciting finals of the year.

With a number of massive upsets early on it is great to see a bit of difference in the World Title race. Australia’s Keely Andrew who was competing as Stephanie Gilmore’s Injury Wild Card made it through to the Quarter Finals but unluckily met Carissa Moore who opened up the heat early with an 8 point ride. Keely’s answer was unfairly scored in comparison but she powered through the heat trying to find a matching wave but couldn’t find it, but a huge result for Keely.

Courtney Conlogue and Bianca Buitendag made their way through the quarters and semi finals with Bianca knocking out Carissa in the semi’s with 2 outstanding waves and some exciting power surfing. Courtney showed no signs of slowing down in her semi taking out Tyler Wright to cruise through to the final.

The final didn’t produce a great amount of waves to choose with a number of small, fast sections and close outs. Courtney found her flow early with a 6.5 to open followed by a 7.17 to combo Bianca off the mark. Bianca, a goofy footer, couldn’t find the waves to match the scores desperately looking for the set waves to use her powerful vertical manoeuvres. Courtney posted another 7 point ride with 5 minutes to go which locked in her final score at 14.5 to take her 2nd consecutive win for 2015 and send chills up Carissa’s spine in the world title race.

1st – Courtney Conlogue (USA) 14.5

2nd – Bianca Buitendag (RSA) 11.10

3rd – Tyler Wright (AUS)

4th – Carissa Moore (HAW)
