After a week of big competition in Hawaii with the NSSA Regionals and the Pipeline Pro happening simultaneously we wrap it up with a massive win by former World Tour and now Big Wave surfer Keala Kennelly at the Banzai Pipeline today.

At 36, Keala has spent time winning countless events on the WCT and Ascending the biggest waves on the planet, as seen in her 2015 win as part of the Wix Super Sessions Tour. She continues to hunt monster waves and dominate line-ups where ever she goes.

The event this week has been held in 4-6 foot / double over head Pipeline and Backdoor options for the girls with numerous barrel opportunities and big winding roundhouse manoeuvres.

Keala was pretty much taking all options creating as many high scoring moves as possible on each wave to stay ahead of youngster and multi-dicipline Hawaiian star Honolua Blomfield who just returned from success at the Noosa Longboard Festival. Another CT alumni member, Melanie Bartels kept her hopes alive to score a 3rd place and Moana Jones took out 4th.

Kennelly’s vertical domination of the finals was gutsy and out of the ordinary to what we are used to seeing. It’s great to see her challenging the young girls who are surfing a much more formulated and generic style.

“I’ve been surfing out here since I was about 12, so I’ve put in a lot of time,” said Kennelly. “Being a big wave surfer definitely helped today. I’ve taken my fair share of beatings, so for sure it helps to not be intimidated when the conditions are heavy like they were today.”

“The final was tough. There were none of the barrels we had this-morning, so it all came down to big turns. I watched the heat before mine and saw Anastasia Ashley get a few of those wide ones, so I definitely knew what my strategy was”

Congratulations to Keala on her win at Pipeline!
