What a week… Taiwan put on some amazing conditions for the girls of the Longboard Qualifying Series. Taitung in Taiwan whipped up 4-6 foot offshore surf to make sure the competitors could make the most out of the event.
The finals were lead by Australian Nava Young who secured 2 waves with 6’s and looked promising for the win. Chelsea Williams, current world number 2, was waiting for the bigger sets but the first couple of waves she took closed out in crucial sections for her. It looked like Nava would take the win until Chelsea pulled into a solid right-hander that took her right across the competition zone and allowed her to complete a number of high scoring manoeuvres to push her just ahead of Nava with only a couple of minutes to go.
The win is a step in the right direction for Chelsea as she aims to claim her first world title next month.
“I’m stoked, it was hard work out there and a lot of paddling but I’m so happy to have won,” Chelsea said. “I knew I could get the score, I just needed the right kind of wave, so it was great that I managed to get that at the end. This gives me a bit of confidence leading into the upcoming GoPro World Longboard Championships China, presented by Wanning and I’ve picked up on a few things that I can work on when I get home so it’s definitely been a good event.”
