Carissa Moore Knocked Out – Bailey Nagy Wins Juniors
The Vans US Open of Surfing had a big Saturday at Huntington Beach California with the Women’s Junior Finals decided and the Women’s WCT Quarter Finals wrapped up.
In the CT quarters there was a shock exit for current points leader Carissa Moore defeated by Australia’s Tyler Wright who’s been having a killer event so far with moves up to scratch with the boys event.
Tyler said after the heat… “Carissa (Moore) and I have had seven finals together and seven times she’s beaten me and every time her surfing is phenomenal,” she said, “It’s amazing to compete against such a great surfer. Between us it’s not so much about beating each other but more about pushing the limits of women’s surfing.”
Malia Manuel defeated Nikki Van Dijk, event defending champ Sally Fitzgibbons defeated Johanne Defay and Steph Gilmore knocked out home favourite Lakey Peterson. The Semis will see Malia take on Tyler and Steph vs Sally.
In the Juniors final Bailey Nagy (14.17) got in front early and and worked hard to keep her spot as leader against the other girls, Mahina Maeda, 16, Brianna Cope 18, and Meah Collins, 14.
The Vans US Open Pro Junior win marks the biggest victory for Bailey Nagy from Hawaii. She said after the final… “I just went out there going for broke. I’ve never made the US Open final and I’ve been in the event a few times now. I was able to get two good scores at the start and it was really nerve wracking to get the scores at the beginning in a long 30 minute final.”
