Biggest Names in Women’s Longboarding Turn out for 2015 Call to the Wall in Malibu

Written by Competitor & Super Grom Liv Stokes

On July 18 – 19 2015, the annual Call to the Wall contest was held in Malibu, California. This is a Coalition contest put on by the Malibu Boardriders Association and had entries from some of the biggest names in long boarding including board shaper Ashley Lloyd-Thompson, Chloe Calmon, Lola Mignot, Carla Zamora and Frankie Seeley. The focus is mainly on longboarding, but there was shortboard division for women, as well.

The conditions in Malibu started on the smaller side (1 – 3 foot) on the first day of the contest. It was super clean and fun. Towards mid afternoon, a lightning storm was in the area, and the contest was placed on a temporary hold, as the lifeguards had closed the beach. After approximately two hours, the lifeguards reopened the beach, and the contest was able to resume.

On Sunday, the waves got a little bigger, and the sets were more consistent. Perfect little peelers kept coming through the line up. It was perfect for a day filled with the semi-finals and finals.

Chloe Calmon, a longboard surfer in the WSL, came to compete in this contest from Brazil. Chloe, a finalist in the Women’s 18-27 division said of the contest.

“To be here is a different experience, because in Brazil we don’t have this culture of the surf clubs, where everybody gets together like a big family.” Said Chloe “It’s all new for me. I’ve always watched all of the contests on the internet and through photos. It feels like a special moment to be a part of it all with the Doheny club. We can feel that the longboarding surf culture is still alive whenever we are here. We see people from 8-80 surfing on the single fin. Everybody is having a good time noseriding and surfing with their friends. It is very nice to be here.” Chloe is a member of the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association.

As a competitor myself, it was such a treat to surf First Point in Malibu with only five other girls in the line up. When my final was competed, it was just as exciting to watch all of the other competitors in their finals. The level of surfing at this event was absolutely amazing.
