Australia’s First Mermaid
There is a fantastic story in Sydney’s tabloid paper The Daily Telegraph shared by The Girls Surf Fraternity on Facebook titled “Australia’s first Malibu Surfing Contest and our First Women’s Champion” by John Morcombe from the Manly Daily from October 11, 2013.
The article highlights Beth Jackman’s win in 5 foot swell at Avalon Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches in 1961. Beth was the first woman to win a surfing contest in Australia out of 14 other girls who entered the event. The article even mentions that Avalon Beach was closed with the danger of loose boards taking out beach goers since leg ropes wouldn’t be invented for at least a decade
