Australian Girls Continue Golden Journey to Rio 2016

The golden beach volleyball girls are at it again Australia’s Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Nikki Laird and are back on the road after a brief break and are firing on all cylinders. These top level athletes have what it takes to make the Olympics and we are stoked to be able to follow their progress as they move closer to qualification and the Olympic dream.

From the Travelling Diary of Mariafe Artacho del Solar

Over the last few days we’ve been in China for the 2014 Women’s Beach Volleyball Classic. We played China 1, Israel and Czech in our pool then we crossed over with Germany in quarter finals. In the semi finals we met with China 2 and then pushed through to meet China 1 again in finals. We only lost one set all tournament in the final which is a great to reflect on and a good confidence boost heading over to the next event in Hong Kong.

Getting to the final wasn’t easy, we came across really strong teams from all over the world, we stayed in control of our side and knew what we had to do. We worked really well as a team and enjoyed the ride.

The final against China 1 was absolutely crazy! The grandstands were packed the crowd was loud, everyone was yelling for their home team, China but it didn’t matter because the vibe was electric. Nikki and I just kept calm, composed and strong on our side of the court. It was a tough fight but our team was competitive and played well. We just loved the atmosphere of the crowd and embraced all the noise and craziness.

It was an amazing feeling to come out on top. Our first international event back after our pre-season so we were a bit nervous but we also felt prepared and excited to be competing again.

We have just made it to Hong Kong to play in the Asian Tour event starting later today. (Thursday) We’ve had really successful results in this tour with a top 3 finish every time (2x silver and 1 bronze) and are aiming for gold this event. There are a lot of tough teams that we will come up against, but again we know what we ca do and we are confident in our preparation. We know we have to stay calm and composed and believe in ourselves.
