European Junior Qualifying Series have descended upon Praia de Baia, Espinho, Portugal this week for the Prozis Pro Junior Espinho this week.
The Portuguese coastline presented 2-4 foot swell for the girls of Europe, most who have had back-to-back events for the last month.
Spaniard Ariane Ochoa just returned from the Volcom Global Championship in California last week to roll straight into the Espinho Pro. Her form was impeccable in the smaller conditions as she moved between challenging conditions with clean technical manoeuvres.
“First final, first win, I couldn’t be happier !” Ochoa said. “It was a fun final for me, I found two good waves quite early and I had a good rhythm going. I didn’t feel nervous and I just went out there confident. It was good to improve my scoreline throughout the event and I’ll try to repeat that strategy in the upcoming events.”
Now ranked N°2 on the European Junior Qualifying Series, Ariane will approach the next event very focused and determined to do well as the tour moves to her home in the Basque Country next month.
“I’m definitely bringing confidence home after this event, and it will be good to have all my family and friends there to support me in Sopela.” Ariane continued.
Event favourite Teresa Bonvalot was knocked out in the quarter finals by Maddi Aizpurua after a deterioration in conditions on day 2 which left the gates wide open for Ariane to through the semis where she herself came up against Maddi, only to defeat her and solidify her finals spot against local girl Carol Henrique.
The event win has pushed Ariane’s ranking up to 2nd on the European Pro Juniors with Carol behind her and Teresa Bonvalot remaining in the top spot after 2 events.
Congratulations to all the girls on a great event.
