A Game Changing Day at the Roxy Pro
6th March 2015

This morning Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast was flat. Certainly it would be another lay day but the waiting period time is running low. WSL Commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer and her team made the decision to run the event for rounds 3 and 4 at 11.30am with a dropping tide and increasing swell. GOOD DECISION.
It was certainly topsy turvie day for the top seeds who all (except Tyler) who appeared out of form. The good thing about this scenario is the highlights of the lower seeds and their talents shining bright.
The inclusion of an extra round without elimination is hoped to push the girls to surf with more risk and power without being eliminated by the competition. It was great to see this additional round highlight some of the progressive talents of the the top 18 girls on tour.
Some amazing surfing went down in Rounds 3 and 4! Silvana Lima psyched Steph Gilmore out in her heat and nearly earned herself a quarter finals entry straight up after nailing a floor less air reverse. Steph got a bomb and ripped it apart right on the buzzer to send herself straight through. Silvana also notched up the first 10 point ride of the season in her round 4 heat agains Sally.
“This was so good for me,” said Lima. “There was a lot pressure for me surfing against Sally, she’s so good. I was waiting for the good waves to do my best. I’m always looking for the airs because they push up the scores and I got 10 points, which is so good.”
Rookie and blond bomb-shell goofy-footer Tatiana Weston-Webb is making her name ring loud and clear smashing her back hand at the most vertical position to cement her quarter final pass.
“I didn’t realize it was so close and that I could still get the score so I’m so relieved,” said Weston-Webb. “I jumped up and down when I found out, there was nothing going through me but pure joy. Quarterfinals my first event of the season. I’m so thankful and so psyched to get to surf Snapper with just two girls out.”
Malia Manuel’s name rang loud across the beach with her continual and modest domination strengthens.
Sally Fiztgibbons had a shocker today with as the announcers said “has been having some very uncharacteristic moves in the line up”. She just didn’t have her groove on today and was defeated and knocked out by the 2015 fire cracker Silvana Lima in round 4.
Lakey Peterson and Courtney Conlogue also found their feet in their last chance round 4 to progress. As well as Carissa Moore who also scraped over the line in an earlier round 3 relegating Lakey.
