3rd Annual Performance Paddling SUP FIESTA

World Champion SUP athlete Candice Appleby, together with Anthony Vela held the 3rd annual Performance Paddling Pro Junior and Youth SUP Fiesta at Bolsa Chica State Beach, Huntington Beach, California last weekend. A great event and initiative to support the grass roots of SUP surfing and racing by Candice and Anthony.

With a building south swell approaching, the nerves of youth sup athletes from all over the world were feeling the pressure and anticipation of what the ocean would have in store for them, on the morning of May 3rd. The rising swell would turn out to be the biggest south swell since last summers Hurricane Marie, coming just in time to meet the worlds biggest youth only standup paddle event. Once again the ocean provided a beautiful arena for the best 17 & under standup paddle athletes to display their skill, talent, and passion.

“All the girls were ripping” said Candice, “From the 8 & Unders to the Junior Pros. This years Champion was 16 year old Lara Claydon from Maui, and she continues to prove that she will be a force to be reckoned with as she climbs into the pro rankings. Young Sasha Kauhane from Oahu has skill and style beyond her years. At 12 years old she was the youngest Jr Pro competitor, and although she missed the finals by a small margin, she went on to win the 12-14 age group which she had just aged up to from 9-11 last year. Sasha’s ripping turn and frontside banks, also won her the female Radical Maneuver award.

“On the racing side of things, California’s 16 year old Shae Foudy proved too strong for her competition in the 15-17 year old age group, but 2nd & 3rd Lara Claydon (Maui) and Anna Blackburn (North Carolina) out on a skillful display of wave riding knowledge on their 12’6” race boards. In the 12-14 age group race, young Jade Howson (12) put in a stellar performance, punching through the surf with great form, to take a convincing victory against some stiff competition, to which she typically falls bridesmaid to in flat water races. This performance won her the Breakthrough Female performance award.”

“There were so many incredible performances, it’s hard to mention them all in anything less than a novel. All in all, what was most evident at this years SupFiesta, was sheer determination, grit, skill and passion from dozens of eager groms, ready to take on whatever conditions Bolsa Chica was going to throw at them.”
