2014 World Longboard Final Leaderboard

In 2014 there was just one ASP World Tour Longboard event for the ladies but there were 9 World Qualifying Events in Peru, NSW, Western Australia, Japan, Hawaii, France and China. Leading up to the World Championship event in Wanning, China, Australian girl Chelsea Williams was in the shadow of Hawaiian Kelia Moniz. With a strong win in the last LQS event of the year in Japan Chelsea had the adrenalin pumping and the determination amped for what could be one of the biggest match ups of her life; to finish 2nd again or take down the 3 times world champ Kelia.

Women’s longboarding in the last 3 years has taken another massive step. The girls are fitter, stronger and more skilful on their boards than ever. This year we saw a number of images coming out of social media of girls boosting 9 + foot boards into the air SAY WHAT! High performance women’s longboarding will continue to grow and gain momentum in 2015 despite only 1 World Championship event. The LQS events are a great opportunity for the sport to dig deep into it’s grassroots level. Here are the final results of the 2014 Women’s Longboard Championships.

Check out also our story with wildcard Erin Dark and Skye Burgess’s interview with Chelsea Williams leading up to the World Titles in December.

#1 Chelsea Williams

Chelsea boosts on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast golden girl who rides right handers most of the year went into the World Title race with a fire in her belly and a determination to make lefts the new right in Wanning, China. After smashing her heat opponents in each stage of the final event, Chelsea matched up with rival Kelia Moniz for the 4th consecutive year. The girls alternated waves until the final hooter when Chelsea returned to the beach as the new World Champion and breaking Kelia’s 3 year winning streak. Chelsea has a strength in her surfing that is nearly unmatched. She is able to execute powerful turns and combine a delicate traditional style moving up and down the board. We look forward to Chelsea’s continued success in 2015.

#2 Kelia Moniz

Kelia is Hawaiian and well, if you watch surfing events you’ll know her brothers and cousins. They dominate the line ups and charge to maintain their reputation as an incredible surfing family. For 3 years Kelia has danced up and down her board as a Roxy girl, to hold the World Title proudly above her head. This girl was born to surf… She has a natural talent and grace on the board. Watching Kelia you think to yourself, ” That doesn’t look hard at all, she’s just tip-toed up the length of her longboard and hung her 10 toes off the end… nothing too it right!?” With the long waves of Waikiki her training ground and taking trips around the globe to surf some incredible waves with the Roxy team, it’s no wonder Kelia the Queen on the waves. Will she be hungry enough to take back her title in 2015?

Kelia has featured as our Clip of the Week, Watch here…
